According to a 2019 study, 43% of U.S. millennials believe that the Communist Manifesto promotes freedom and equality better than the Declaration of Independence.
The study was conducted by a group called Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. The only purpose that this foundation appears to have is to educate the general public about the horrors of communist regimes throughout human history. The Daily Counter has an article about Joseph Stalin’s intentional mass-famine event known as Holodomor. Several news organizations have cited the foundation’s findings from the Washington Post to The New York Times.
On their webpage, the foundation describes the purpose of their existence.
From the famines, purges, and gulags of Soviet Russia to Mao’s Great Leap Forward and the Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge—from the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre to the Castro regime’s 2012 murder of Cuban democracy activist Oswaldo Payá—communists have killed more than 100 million people over the past century. Countless more suffered and suffer still.
Shamefully, the free world never demanded a moral reckoning for the crimes of communist regimes. Those witnesses with a living memory of 20th-century communism are passing away. And an entire generation of Americans is open to collectivist ideas because they don’t know the truth.
At the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, We tell the truth about communism because our vision is for a world free from the false hope of communism.
Our mission is to educate this generation and future generations about the ideology, history, and legacy of communism.
It is unclear as to the reason why so many millennials are willing to give communism a try.
Perhaps large sections of the millennial crowd being willing to take communism over the Declaration of Independence is a sign that we need to do something about public education.
If one were to ask the average millennial about the Holocaust that person could give some sort of description about the event displaying Adolf Hitler’s cruelty. However, those same millennials probably couldn’t give any detailed account of communist Leader Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward that claimed up to 45 million lives.
Some estimates state that 20 million of that 45 million died of starvation due to policies enacted by Mao Zedong. That makes the Great Leap Forward the single largest mass murder event in recorded history.
Events like this and Holodomor provide a good snapshot as to the reason why there are internet memes depicting communism as being synonymous with hunger.
Our education system and the general public should be educating these people about the dangers of communism. It is easy to get people to reject fascism and that is a good thing. However, while fascism is an abhorrent ideology we know that communism has a higher body count. If that is the case, and it is, we should we denouncing fascism but even more effort should be given into denouncing and repudiating communism.
Millennials need to be made aware that the early wave Marxists praised the work of Adolf Hitler. It should also be stated that some of the same people who pushed communism throughout history attempted to cover up the sins of communist-enacted mass butchering events and even famines.
Our very future in the United States might very well depend on our ability to explain the truth that communism is the bloodiest, most corrupt and deceptive political ideology in human history.
