27 years is quite a long time. That’s almost 3 decades. 27 years is also the number of years that South Carolina Senator Luke Rankin (R-Horry) has been in office. Senator Rankin has exhibited a pattern of lies, deceit, lack of ethics, intentionally joining committee after committee to ensure no ethics investigations touch him, and financial enrichment.
Let’s take a look at the type of legislator this person is and allow readers to decide if this is the type of person that should represent a dog shelter let alone the people of South Carolina.
In order to understand someone like Senator Rankin, one must compare him to a quote from another Senator from Ancient Rome.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero
In his infinite wisdom, Cicero predicted that there would be traitors. When it comes to traitorous behavior, Senator Rankin is an expert. If one has any questions about his ability to display loyalty and trustworthiness then that person should ask the South Carolina Democratic Party. Senator Rankin was a Democrat.
The problem with this is that he switched parties after realizing that since South Carolina is a red state he would never get anything done as a Democrat. Instead of making better arguments as a Democrat, he abandoned ship.
Every time Senator Rankin speaks keep Cicero’s words in mind. “For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims…” Keep in mind that every time Senator Rankin pretends to be a Republican, at one point, he had to also pretend to be a Democrat. This means that Senator Rankin, unlike most corrupt politicians, actually rehearsed his rehashed and predictable bills, comments, and actions from both sides of the political aisle.
This man tries to play both sides because he is the equivalent of a political COVID-19. He spreads his infections from all sides of the aisle in the hopes of replicating interests, benefits, favors, and, allegedly, cash. He isn’t just playing the people of South Carolina but also the entirety of the South Carolina General Assembly.
Here is an example. Earlier this year, Senator Rankin voted down an anti-abortion bill. It doesn’t matter how someone feels about abortion for this particular example. Why would a Republican Senator vote down a bill that most of his party and constituents would have supported?
Senator Rankin likely voted this way in order to earn a future favor from the South Carolina Democrats. If the person reading this happens to be pro-choice and doesn’t see the problem with what Senator Rankin did then consider the fact that if he were a Democrat he’d betray you too. That’s the problem with political mercenaries; they’re always for hire.
“A liar should have a good memory.” – Marcus Fabius Quintilianus
Senator Rankin appears to be allergic to telling the truth. Let’s take a look at a prime example of where he lied. This lie not only distorted the truth but the lie also denied the legitimate concerns of his constituents.
In 2013, Senator Rankin claimed, “people are not talking to me in Horry County about ethics reform.” The problem with this claim is that in the same year the South Carolina Office of the Inspector General sent Senator Rankin a letter imploring him to investigate matters that relate to ethics. Click here for a copy of the letter.
Something is clearly wrong here. If S.C. IG’s office ever sent Senator Rankin a letter asking for more ethics investigations then that would suggest that maybe Senator Rankin was lying when he claimed the people of Horry County, S.C. weren’t interested in ethics reform.
This lie isn’t just an obvious one to point out but it is egregious when one thinks about the American population and, specifically, South Carolina. It is absolutely asinine to suggest that South Carolinians of all people wouldn’t be naturally suspicious of their elected leaders and would want ethics probes and reforms. This is known as a rebel state that is filled with citizens who never much trusted the government.
Anyone who understands the psychology and sociology of the U.S. population would quickly realize that citizens of South Carolina have a borderline hostile attitude towards government. Wouldn’t that suggest people in any part of this state would’ve wanted ethics reforms even if Luke Rankin never hears it? He can’t claim to have never heard of it. Again, S.C. IG sent him a letter about the subject in the same year.
What adds further justification for calling Rankin dishonest is due to the fact that he is currently running on ethics reform. How can a man currently running on ethics reform claim that his own constituents were never talking ethics?
That would mean only one of two things. It could mean that Senator Rankin is, in fact, lying about his constituents not talking about ethics reform and is running on that platform to try to make it appear like he isn’t apart of the problem with the lack of ethics exuded from South Carolina Legislators. Or he is running on a platform that he once claimed his constituents weren’t talking about which would mean he is running on something that doesn’t reflect the beliefs of his own voters.
Feel free to determine which is the case. However, if you believe Luke Rankin is telling the truth here then contact the author of this article. There are goblins teeth and unicorn horns to be sold.
“Hello Fellow Ethical People”
“A lie told often enough becomes the truth.” – Vladimir Lenin, Communist Dictator
As mentioned in the liar section, Senator Rankin is currently seeking re-election with ethics reform as apart of his platform. The problem with this is that Senator Rankin sits on the South Carolina Senate Ethics Committee. This man is on a committee that would target ethics and investigative ethics violations committed by S.C. Legislators. Wouldn’t this be the equivalent of a pastor wanting more Jesus inside of a church when it was his job in the first place to make it happen?
Let’s list some things about Luke Rankin. After reading the listing, the reader should ask themselves if Senator Rankin can reform ethics or be the reason for the reforms. There are multiple examples of Senator Rankin’s lack of ethics. However, there are very few examples that are better than the Senator’s link to South Carolina’s judiciary and judicial system.
Let’s take a look at a list of judicial issues that Senator Rankin has personally created. While reading through this list keep the picture to the left in mind. Senator Rankin is a corruption centipede with each part of his corrupting influence being fed through the multiple sections of his self-rewarding behavior and political positioning.
Here is the list:
- Senator Rankin chairs the Senate’s Judiciary Committee and also the South Carolina Judicial Merit Selection Committee or JMSC. The JMSC selects judges for the State of South Carolina. Even if Senator Rankin’s vote or approval for a judge gets overruled by the other members of the JMSC the fact remains that he is still the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Rankin has power of judicial elections even outside of the JMSC. This man has that much power over who becomes a judge in South Carolina and he has that power from two different sources.
- Senator Rankin is an attorney-legislator who has made millions from judgments given from the same judges that he picks. Read the bullet point above if you can’t understand how much of a problem this truly is. According to the South Carolina Policy Council, Senator Rankin made a whopping $16 million in legal work. This is partly because of government connections. Some of the court cases and legal matters involved government land use, adoptions, and worker’s compensation claims even when the claims were being made against an entity or branch belonging to the State of South Carolina.
- This man is a walking rehashing of Operation Lost Trust. Senator Rankin goes out of his way to keep the people of South Carolina out of the loop of politics and without a voice. For example, the JMSC selects judges but doesn’t give common citizens a voice to vote on those judges. Senator Rankin would claim that the Judicial Merit Selection Committee does have civilians but those civilians are usually rich or very highly connected attorneys. It makes absolutely no sense for him to say this given that Hope Blackley sits on that committee and was once a clerk of court. If someone was a clerk of court then that means they worked for the State of South Carolina. She isn’t some common civilian. She’s just a government official who switched into another government role. That’s hardly what one would describe as a “common civilian.”
- Senator Rankin has millions so even if he isn’t in politics the money he made while in politics can be used to influence judges elections. Politicians have been known to accept money. Even if Senator Rankin got out of politics he would still be a lawyer. Why wouldn’t he slide some money under the table so that the judges he likes makes it to the bench? Wouldn’t he know which legislators he can bribe and can’t bribe given the fact he used to work with the same people?
If Rankin is Guarding Your Money Then Prepare to be BROKE
In 2017, there was a debate in the South Carolina House and Senate over proposed gas tax increases. Right now, if it were not for the low gas prices in South Carolina many people would have trouble getting around due to job loss. One would think that a Republican wouldn’t want a gas tax increase. After all, the generally accepted position from the Republican Party in any state or U.S. territory is to lower taxes wherever possible. Why then would Senator Rankin, a supposed Republican Legislator in a red state, support gas tax increases?
Let’s not forget the Santee Cooper fiasco in South Carolina. Those failed nuclear plant projects cost the ratepayers to fork over billions of dollars with very little given in return. Recently, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster stated that the citizens of the State of South Carolina in counties such as Georgetown, Berkeley, and Horry will have to pay, on average, $6200 per household in order to cover the failure of Santee Cooper and Senator Rankin. This happened to his constituents on his watch. Again, he also supported tax increases on gasoline so it’s not like South Carolinians can get some relief at the pump if Senator Rankin has his way.
Below is a copy of what South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster’s has said about the cost per household depending on the county.
In conclusion, remember that this year is still an election year. Perhaps it is time to send Senator Rankin back to his law practice on a permanent basis. 27 years is a lot of time to produce very few positive results.
There is no way people can come out for a career politician when it is absolutely clear that career politicians have a tendency to be the most entrenched in corruption.
The people of South Carolina deserve better than someone like Luke Rankin. Even if the people of Horry County beat COVID-19 they still have another virus to get rid of and that virus picks your judges and profits off of them, votes down legislation that most of his constituents would want, doesn’t fix your roads, doesn’t fix your schools, and gained a lot of money in the process.
